The Great Lakes Blues Society Presents
BLUES LEGEND
JAMES COTTON BAND
Saturday October 13, 2007
Music Hall – London
The word legend is one that gets bandied about a fair bit, but we’re not hesitating one instant in using the word to describe the legendary James Cotton who the Great Lakes Blues Society will be presenting in concert at the Music Hall (185 Queen Avenue) on October 13.
In his 63-year career, that began when he was adopted by Sonny Boy Williamson and soon after placed in charge of Howlin’ Wolf’s band, Cotton has played with all the giants. After he left Wolf, James became a mainstay in Muddy Waters’ band, playing on many of the classics of that late blues giants repertoire. Since then he has been consistently recognised as one of the great blues harp players of all time and has worked with Johnny Winter, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Freddie King, Santana, Steve Miller, The Grateful Dead, B.B. King, Jimmie Vaughan and dozens of other blues and rock stars. Along the way he has been nominated for the Grammy, and has been leading his own band now for forty years.
His visits to London are legendary too, setting house records at Fryfogels, and, even, dropping in to jam at the Firehall on the one day Brian Mortimer chose to take the day off. Most recently he appeared at Bluesfest three years ago and, as expected, left the audience demanding more well beyond the open air curfew.
Supporting James at this appearance will be longtime London favourite Danny Brooks who will be bringing his full band, The Memphis Brothers, with him after appearing solo on his last couple of visits to our town. Also, the show will mark the reunification of T.W. and the All-Stars, who headed in different directions two years ago but have decided that it always sounds better when they play together.
Tickets for this amazing show are priced at 35 dollars, with a ten dollar discount for members of the Great Lakes Blues Society, and can be purchased at Tequilla Rose on Dundas Street, and The Village Idiot in Wortley Village, or by calling 519-963-7247. A limited number of reserved tables are still available at that number or by emailing Brian Mortimer at brian@greatlakesbluessociety.com
