WHAT: CHICAGO COMES TO LONDON WHEN: Friday, June 20, 2008 WHERE: Music Hall, 185 Queens Avenue, London (enter off Queens Ave between Richmond and Clarence) WHO: Billy Branch And The Sons Of Blues Billy Branch is one of the premier blues harmonica players around. Born in Chicago in 1951 Billy has been playing blues harp since he was 10 years old. He got his first big break when he won a blues harp contest in Chicago in 1975, beating a Chicago legend in the process. He has recorded with an incredible list of other blues legends from Muddy Waters to James Cotton. The cd Harp Attack! featuring Cotton, Carey Bell, Junior Wells and Billy is recognized as a blues harp classic. Billy started the Sons Of Blues over 30 years ago and the band was one of the featured artists at the main stage at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2007. Although personnel has changed over the years the band is still a Chicago favourite and Billy Branch a Chicago mainstay. In addition to all of this Billy is a blues educator, one of the major forces in the Blues In The Schools programs in the USA.Blues producer Chicago Beau has written: “ Billy Branch has become a beacon and a model for his times;as an artist and social / cultural activist …. Billy Branch is a bluesman; Billy Branch is the Blues.” Carl Weathersby Blues Band Born in Jackson Mississippi, Carl Weathersby emigrated to the Chicago area when he was a young man and has been playing the blues ever since. He was the lead guitarist in The Sons Of Blues for 14 years before forming his own band and he has not slowed down since.He is widely considered one of the very best blues guitarist in Chicago, and anywhere. His scorching style and articulate phrasing have been praised by critics near and far and his soulful and deep vocals accompany that perfectly. He is a bluesman’s bluesman. Nick Moss And The Flip Tops Are carrying on the Chicago blues tradition. This band is in demand and has garnered rave reviews for their live performances from, among others, Buddy Guy himself. Nick Moss learned the blues by playing with the masters including Jimmy Dawkins, Jimmy Rogers and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith. The band and Nick have been nominated for three 2008 Blues Music Awards, Album of the Year, Band of the Year and Instrumentalist-Guitar (Nick Moss). The BMAs are the most prestigious awards in the blues world and these nominations are among the most coveted of the BMAs. And this is the opening act.This band is the real deal and will be around to entertain blues fans for years to come. This is the London premier but it won’t be the last we see them.
